Day 1 Remote Learning Bootcamp - Video Conferencing

It is important to be able to use more than one video conferencing tool in the event that one or more services get overloaded. They also have unique tools that make them valuable in different situations. Practice initiating and scheduling meetings with Meet, Hangouts, and Zoom using the tutorials provided. If you experience any technical difficulties, please email support@gcds.net for assistance.

Day 2 Remote Learning Bootcamp - Screencastify and YouTube

Across our country, asynchronous learning has emerged as the clear bedrock of a successful remote learning rollout. The term “asynchronous learning” means that students will be tuning in to your classroom lesson at different times of the day. In simple terms: pre-recorded daily lessons make remote learning possible. Screencastify is a great tool for producing these videos, but you can also use your cell phone if you want to show something (i.e. a drawing lesson with paper and pencil). Screencastify is taking a lot longer to process these videos because of the number of schools now relying on it, so we are asking all teachers to publish these videos to YouTube so they are hosted quickly and consistently.

Day 3 Remote Learning Bootcamp - Google Classroom and LE Slideshow

You need to post your videos and assignments consistently to Google Classroom or the LE Slideshow, depending on the division you teach in. Today, let’s focus on getting ourselves acquainted with the tools we have to post assignments to students. Remember, consistency is key. Do NOT email your assignments directly to students - rather, use the LE Slideshow and Google Classroom to get the job done.

Day 4 Remote Learning Bootcamp - Calendars

Finding time to meet with students, parents, and each other is critical for keeping everyone connected during remote operations. Google Calendar and Calendly will help us achieve that goal, as well as set up live virtual meetings with students using either Meet or Zoom. Parents, colleagues, and even students will be directed to your Calendly link in your email signatures to book appointments, which will cut down on emails you receive by a whole lot with people asking "when are you free?" (yay!)

Remove YouTube Suggested Videos, Endscreens, Autoplay, etc.

We've pushed out an extension to all faculty, staff, and students that removes the endscreen videos, recommendations on the side, autoplay, and a whole bunch of other features. These settings can be toggled by clicking the extension at the top right of Chrome and checking/unchecking items in the dropdown menu. We think this will be a useful tool even beyond remote learning. Please remember this only works when users are signed into Chrome with their GCDS email account. Otherwise, parents can install this extension on non-school Mac, PC, and Chromebook devices at home using the Parent Bootcamp doc.
